Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is coming in 2022 according to leaked schedule

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will go into production next year according to business plans that have surfaced detailing some of the company’s big launches in 2022.

It looks like the folks over at TheElec have gotten Samsung’s production schedule for 2022, which has been translated by a leaker named FrontTron. The Galaxy Watch5 is labeled as going into production in Q3-Q4, which is from July to December. That could indicate that there is a Galaxy Watch5 release date window around the same time we saw the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which landed in August of this year.

It probably comes as no surprise that another Samsung smartwatch is coming, as it usually drops yearly anyway, but it probably does give us an idea of when we might see it.

There’s no information shared on what will be packing in the Galaxy Watch 5, but we think it’s safe to assume Google’s Wear OS will work again. Samsung helped build the new version of Wear and it’s currently the only smartwatch available for purchase that runs on Wear OS 3.0.

Compatible watches from the likes of Fossil and Movoi will have to wait for the latest TicWatch lineup until next year to see what the new Wear has to offer outside of Samsung’s smartwatch.

This news about a production window for Samsung’s next smartwatch comes as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 grabs a portion of Apple’s market share in 2021. That was according to an analyst report on global smartwatch shipments by Counterpoint Research, which suggested Watch dominated 4 on Q3 shipments.

This is good news for Samsung, Google, and its Wear OS platform, which has so far struggled to overcome the dominance of the Apple Watch and other smartwatch competitors as well.

When the first rumors started circulating that Samsung could give up its Tizen platform to Google, we were certainly skeptical about the move. While the Google Wear experience on the Galaxy Watch 4 still feels Tizen, Samsung and Google have outlined plans to evolve the platform over time. Plus, we haven’t really seen Fitbit enter the Wear equation since it was acquired by Google in early 2021.

We fully expect more new Wear OS smartwatches to land in 2022 and it looks like Samsung will be part of this new watch brigade to help give Google’s smartwatch platform a much-needed boost.
